چکیده

We theoretically investigate the use of Bessel light beams generated using axicons for creating optical dipole traps for cold atoms and atomic waveguiding. Zeroth-order Bessel beams can be used to produce highly elongated dipole traps allowing for the study of one-dimensional trapped gases and realization of a Tonks gas of impentrable bosons. First-order Bessel beams are shown to be able to produce tight confined atomic waveguides over centimeter distances. 03.75.Fi,03.75.-b,05.30.Jp Typeset using REVTEX

Toroidal Optical Dipole Traps for Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates using Laguerre-Gaussian Beams

We theoretically investigate the use of red-detuned Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser beams of varying azimuthal mode index for producing toroidal optical dipole traps in two-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Higherorder LG beams provide deeper potential wells and tighter confinement for a fixed toroid radius and laser power. Numerical simulations of the loading of the toroidal trap from...

Bessel beams: diffraction in a new light

Diffraction is a cornerstone of optical physics and has implications for the design of all optical systems. The paper discusses the so-called ‘non-diffracting’ light field, commonly known as the Bessel beam. Approximations to such beams can be experimentally realized using a range of different means. The theoretical foundation of these beams is described and then various experiments that make u...

Three-dimensional holographic ring traps

We describe a class of diffractive optical elements intended for use in holographic optical trapping systems that project ring-like optical traps. Unlike optical vortex traps, which carry orbital angular momentum, these ring-like traps implement a force-free one-dimensional potential energy well for micrometer scale objects. Also unlike most optical vortices or ring-like Bessel beams, these rin...

Quantum Mechanics of One-Dimensional Trapped Tonks Gases

Several experimental groups are currently working towards realizing quasione-dimensional (1D) atom de Broglie waveguides and loading them with ultracold atoms. The dynamics becomes truly 1D in a regime (Tonks gas) of low temperatures and densities, and large positive scattering lengths for which the transverse mode becomes frozen, in which case the many-body Schrödinger dynamics becomes exactly...

Optical conveyors: a class of active tractor beams.

We experimentally demonstrate a class of tractor beams created by coherently superposing coaxial Bessel beams. These optical conveyors have periodic intensity variations along their axes that act as highly effective optical traps for micrometer-scale objects. Trapped objects can be moved selectively upstream or downstream along the conveyor by appropriately changing the Bessel beams' relative p...
